On Wednesday afternoon the St. Andrew’s Lions tipped off their 2021-22 season in Capital One Arena, overcoming a physical matchup to win against the non-conference opponent St. Mary’s Ryken by a score of 42-39.
Opening game rust in addition to tremendous defense from both sides led to a close first half. Heading into halftime tied at 17, there was only one 3 pointer made by either team, and it seemed that neither squad had total momentum.
That all changed on the first play after the break when Senior Masai Troutman drove through the Ryken defense and dunked over center Andre Skelin. The Lions took advantage of the energy from the highlight play, going on 13-4 run, expanding their lead to nine. However, neither team pulled away as the end of the fourth quarter neared. After some missed free throws and late threes by St. Mary’s, the Lions’ lead dwindled to three with a few seconds remaining. The Lions’ consistent defensive presence was the difference on last shot of the game as Skelin was forced into shooting an awkward three pointer by multiple Lions defenders, falling short as the buzzer rang.
Looking ahead, the Lions will make their home opener on Friday as they take on the Sandy Spring Friends School on Lion’s Court at 4:30 PM.
