St. Andrew’s has recently reached a huge milestone in terms technological proficiency and creative freedom opportunities for all students with the introduction of the brand-new Design Lab (or D-Lab, for short) in the school’s lower level. With the D-Lab comes a completely new course available to junior and senior students (Engineering Innovation and Design Thinking), as well as the opportunity to become a full-fledged D-Lab intern, which allows upper school students to immerse themselves in the new and exciting machinery that the D-Lab has to offer. The D-Lab is equipped with a 3D printer, laser cutter, two desktop computers to conduct design projects on, and a multitude of tools and utilities at students’ disposal. While the equipment in the D-Lab can and will be used in some instances by standard visual arts classes, D-Lab interns can gain full access to the equipment before and after school as well as during the day through training workshops. When the necessary certifications have been earned, D-Lab interns can conceptualize, design, print, and showcase essentially anything that they can think of, which in turn opens up immeasurable possibilities for them to express their passion for engineering and innovation, all while establishing a sort of creative identity amongst themselves. Any aspiring upper school D-Lab interns should contact Mr. James and ask for an application form if they wish to apply.
