September 16th, 2024 – the St. Andrew’s golf team is playing in their first match of the season at Needwood Golf Course. Junior Alex Allbritton, in his first year at St. Andrew’s, is hitting his first strokes for the golf team with which he would unknowingly create a first in the program.

Mr. Horowitz, head golf coach and English teacher said, “Alex started off a bit slow this match.” Even though Alex started off slow, he kept composure. No one, not even Alex, could predict that a seemingly typical stroke of his club would go down in school history.

Alex stepped up to the tee of this par 3, 170-yard, over the water hole, holding his 3 hybrid club.

Alex readied his swing, pulling the head of his club back to his ear, and swung his club swiftly into the ball. As the ball flew through the air, Coach Horowitz, who watched from afar, turned around and saw it soar gracefully over the water, landing five feet from the hole and gently rolling in. The crowd of strangers, coaches, teammates, and opponents cheered in celebration. As Mr. Horowitz said, “It was a really cool, happy moment”

The St. Andrew’s Golf team went on to beat the Maret school 180-178 in a nailbiter of a match. “The hole-in-one helped the morale a lot and he got a standing ovation at the morning meeting,” Horowitz said.

Alex Allbritton’s hole-in-one did not just have an impact on the game, but on the rest of the season too. “It was a really cool moment that started the season off with a bang.” This is a big reason for the golf team’s success this season. The golf team finished third in the MAC championship with contributions from seniors Braden Weber, Adrian Kanupke, and Andrew Orsi.
