Attention St. Andrew’s visual art lovers! For the first time in recent history, an Art Club will be available for students to join. This new club allows students to get creative and improve their art skills while exploring different art styles and having fun.
Sophomore Sean Sweeney is the president of the Art Club. According to Sweeney, he started the club because “most students at St. Andrew’s are not able to take art classes for the entire year, so [he] thought this was a good opportunity to keep doing art for the full school year.” Many students and faculty are also excited about the new Art Club, which has accumulated a total of 31 members. Ms. Cook, Art Club sponsor and visual arts teacher, said, “I’m ecstatic. There is never enough time in the class to get everything done people want to, and many people can’t fit art classes into their schedules, so this is a great community to build visual art skills and support each other.”
Sweeney reminds students that prior art background does not matter, anyone can join. In fact, most students in the club have little prior art experience. James Clay, a sophomore at St. Andrew’s, said the Art Club “gives [him] time to draw what [he] wants, and [he] wants to be better at art.”
The club meets weekly in room 102 on Tuesdays during Activity Period. According to Sweeney, bringing a sketchbook to each meeting is helpful but not required. Before each meeting, students are sent a Google form to vote on what they want to do that period. At each meeting, students are given a sheet with different prompts and options for their creations. The rest of the time is spent creating and eventually voting on the best pieces. The winner will receive a prize, which could be candy!
Even if you are not a member of the Art Club, any student is welcome to attend their meetings – in fact, it is encouraged! Sweeney said that anyone can attend their meetings “as long as they sign in and actually make art,” making the Art Club a perfect place to go when bored during Activity Periods. But will it always be this way?
When asked what the future of Art Club looks like, Sweeney said he wants to keep the club going, “most likely for the remainder of my years at St. Andrew’s. I’m unsure who will continue it after me, but I hope it continues.”
