To some, three is a magic number, but to the golf team at St. Andrew’s five is one of them. Even though school has only been in session for about one month, the golf team has been practicing and playing for much longer. Preseason started on the 22nd of August, and the team hasn’t slowed down since. With the season half-way done, the question on a lot of peoples’ minds is, “Does the team have enough to win a fifth MAC Championship?” Looking at the talent this year, and analyzing the other schools, the answer is, yes.
They have won three games, beating Georgetown Day, Potomac, and Calverton, and lost a grueling match against The Heights. Although in years past an undefeated season wasn’t out of the ordinary, the loss to The Heights proved to be optimistic due to the fact that each player shot their best round of the season.
With the loss of Captain Tim Gregg, class of 2011, and Freshman CiCi Lekakos the team was fortunate to receive four new players: freshman Danny Knauss, Chris Reneberg, Justin Gorton, and sophomore Mason Horst. Those players joined veterans: seniors Michael Fuller (Captain) and Cole Greenspan, juniors Jacob Reiskin, Rich Koch and Sami Spaccasi, and sophomore Andrew Bubes. When asked about the team’s improvement so far, Fuller stated, “We have had a tough season thus far, but each match is getting better than the last; so we are trending in a good direction.”
At first, it was difficult losing Gregg, with whom the team won four consecutive banners. But Fuller has accepted the leadership position and is ready to carry the team. He is helped by Koch and Greenspan, who are respectively the second and third shooters. Jacob Reiskin, who is remembered as the person who shot par to win the championship in 2010, will be a great help as well. The important part about the team this year is that everyone is contributing; it’s not Fuller, Koch, and Greenspan doing all the work; the freshman are stepping up, and Gorton shot his best round in a recent game.
The regular season is important because a team needs to improve and match up against other schools, but in the end, it’s all about the tournament. As is evident by the banners decorating the gym, our golf team is impeccable in the offseason. Let’s hope that continues this year.
The tournament hosts all the MAC golf teams, so the team will have to be more vigilant than the opposition during the regular season, and reevaluate, if need be, their strategies. With regards to another banner, Fuller commented, “I think a fifth banner is possible, but it will take everyone playing at the top of their game. I hope we can do it, and I think we can, but it will take some work. We are looking good this year too, and definitely deeper than last year.” Coming from a player that was on last year’s team, that confidence is very uplifting. Greenspan reiterated, “I think the team is deep this year and if everyone steps up and does their job, we have a shot. We played Flint Hill and they were a good test for us.”
The tournament begins October 18, and as that day approaches, we wish the best of luck to our golfers. Throughout the past four years, they have numerously beaten the odds and played big when it was needed. Last year’s win was dramatic and really showcased what this team is made of. Hopefully, they won’t need a Cinderella finish this year; maybe they will flat out pummel the other teams. They have, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Will they get 2012? If they play their cards right, we might see another banner in the gym in the very near future.
